ap – Why and how you decided to become an architect?

Carlos Ferrater – Visiting the Senillosa House of Jose Antonio Coderch of Sentmenat. I learnt / understood the work of the architect. Since then I tried to be faithful to that first decision.

ap – Please mention to us your approach to design and architecture?

CF – I believe that architecture should have a social background, made for people. There should always be a constructive reason that allows to go from the first idea to finished building.

ap – Mimarlık mesleğini neden, nasıl seçtiniz?

CB – Belki de içinde orta-lise yıllarımı geçirdiÄŸim Düyun-u Umumiye yapıtı etkiledi… Liseyi bitirdiÄŸimde katıldığım 1000 soruluk bir soruÅŸturmadan sonra söyleÅŸtiÄŸimiz uzman da mimarlık dalını seçersem mutlu olacağımı, baÅŸarılı olacağımı söyledi. Yalnızca mimarlık dallarında (Ä°TÃœ ve DGSA) üniversite sınavlarına girdim. Ä°kisini de kazandım. Öteki sanatlarla birlikte olabilmek için DGSA’yı seçtim.

ap – Türk mimarlığını dünya mimarlık bütünü içinde nereye oturtuyorsunuz?

The iconic building shares certain aspects both with an iconic object, such as a Byzantine painting of Jesus, and the philosophical definition of an icon, that is, a sign with some factor in common with the thing it represents. On the one hand, to become iconic a building must provide a new and condensed image, be high in figural shape or gestalt, and stand out from the city.

ap- What do you think of contemporary Turkish architecture?

IK- It is not well known in our country. Anyway I was impressed of Turkish architecture represented in Aga Khan Awards catalogue. It was high level of really contemporary architecture.
